Carmen Sandiego challenges kids to discover the world around
For over a decade, kids have been chasing
the elusive Carmen Sandiego and her V.I.L.E. gang, learning about geography and
cultures, not to mention science, math, language arts, music, and history.
Carmen Sandiego was originally conceived in 1983 by a group of innovative
software designers at a then-fledgling family company known as
Brøderbund Software. To inspire kids to learn geography, the creators
wanted a female "heroine" whose name sounded different, but was unmistakably
easy to pronounce. Her first software game "Where in the World is Carmen
Sandiego?" shipped in 1985.
In addition to the award-winning line of educational software, Carmen
Sandiego has inspired three award-winning television shows, books, magazines,
games, and puzzles, with a combined viewing audience of over 10 million viewers
