Screen Saver
Views from the Hubble
Telescope
We have always wondered what is up there. For tens of
thousands of years, we have charted objects in the night sky and speculated
about the nature of the universe. But only very recently have we had the means
to see far into the heavens. Now technology enables us to unravel some of the
deeper mysteries of the cosmos.
Through manned and unmanned spacecraft and inventions like
the Hubble Telescope, we have viewed such celestial phenomena as stellar birth
and death galaxies' interactions, and planetary weather. We have found
previously unknown solar systems. And we have received images from space that
amaze us with their beauty and confound us with their nearly unimaginable
distance and scale.
This screen saver presents twenty-seven NASA photographs
selected by the Scientific American staff. Your computer screen makes a perfect
window into deep space.
This software is easy to install on Mac- or PC-based
systems, our screen savers can be set up to cycle continuously, changing images
at any interval the user selects, or used as wallpaper. (That is: one image
comes on at startup and stays put until a different one is selected.) Image
sets can be customized so that the user need only see favorites. Detailed
information (media, dimensions, date, etc.) for each image, and a concise
biography of the artist, may be had at the click of a mouse.
