The Life and Work of Explorer Thor HeyerdahlDetermined to test his theories of migration among early civilizations, anthropologist and explorer Thor Heyerdahl built exact reproductions of vessels once manned by ancient Peruvians, Egyptians, and Sumerians and set sail, risking his reputation and his life in four epic voyages. With his first voyage, Heyerdahl sought to prove that pre-Inca inhabitants of South America could have populated the South Pacific. He sailed the balsa raft Kon-Tiki from Peru in 1947, arriving in Polynesia after 101 days at sea on the perilously waterlogged raft. The Ra expeditions from Africa to the West Indies in 1969 and 1970 showed that it would have been possible for ancient Mediterranean peoples to sail to the Americas in papyrus reed boats long before Columbus. Heyerdahl also organized the first archeological dig at the pyramids of Tucume, Peru, and his work on Easter Island helped explain how the enormous statues were carved from volcanic rock and moved across the island. Kon-Tiki Interactive explores the mysterious origins of the world's civilizations and captures the life and adventurous spirit of one of the century's most original explorers. Features:

Reviews:CD-ROM Today, June 1996 "For the last 50 years, scientist and explorer Thor Heyerdahl has studied and developed theories about the migration of mankind across the oceans. Not one to rest on a hypothesis, Heyerdahl actually tested his theories in the real world. "To prove his contention that migrants to Polynesia could have come from South America, and not Asia as the prevailing hypothesis stated, he and a team built a craft, the Kon-Tiki, using Indian techniques and sailed from Peru to Polynesia. The Kon-Tiki expedition and other oceanic treks in primitive vessels, including a trip across the Atlantic in an Egyptian-style reed boat are showcased in this CD-ROM. "Kon-Tiki Interactive is an adventurous multimedia documentary with fantastic production values. The disc is divided into seven main chapters, including Heyerdahl's biography, the Galapogos expedition, Easter Island and the trip down the Tigris river. Each expedition is filled with text screens, video clips, photographs, and maps and diagrams charting the expeditions and archeological digs. Although Heyerdahl's books contain more in-depth information, you can find more on this CD-ROM than in an average television documentary."
