The New JPS Translation

The Jewish Publications Society is the oldest and most distinguished publisher of Jewish books in the English language. Its mission is to educate and enrich the Jewish community through the publications of both classic and contemporary literature of outstanding quality.

Since 1888, JPS has been committed to a multifaceted publishing program including:

  • Bible translation and Bible commentary
  • Original works and translations of Jewish classical texts
  • General literature, including poetry, fiction, belles lettres and social commentary
  • Books for children and young adults
  • Studies of contemporary and social concerns

During its long and prestigious history, JPS has come to be regarded as the standard against which all other publishers measure their success. By devoting its efforts exclusively to publishing those books which best serve the present state and future growth of the Jewish community - regardless of expected distribution or costs - JPS maintains an enviable position of respect in the world of Jewish publishing.

In the fulfillment of its mission, The Jewish Publication Society is guided by the understanding that it is not-for-profit corporation serving the will of the Jewish community as interpreted by its members and governing Board of Trustees.

The TANAKH is an entirely original translation of the Holy Scriptures into contemporary English, based on the Masoretic - the traditional Hebrew-text.

It is the culmination of three decades of collaboration by academic scholars and rabbis representing the three largest branches of organized Judaism in America.

Not since the third century B.C.E., when seventy-two elders of the tribes of Israel created the Greek translation of Scriptures known as the Septuagint, has such a broad-based committee of Jewish scholars produced a major Bible translation.

In executing this monumental task, the translators made use of the entire range of biblical interpretation, ancient and modern, Jewish and non-Jewish. They drew upon the latest findings in linguistics and archaeology as well as the work of early rabbinic and medieval commentators, grammarians, and philologians. The resulting text is a triumph of literary style and biblical scholarship, unsurpassed in accuracy and clarity.
