Reviews:

Quandary Review by Steve Ramsey

"Chinese history plays a big part in this game, and whilst Qin leans somewhat heavily on the edutainment button, for those who don’t mind leaning that way it is a reasonable collection of puzzles, plus a glimpse into ancient Chinese culture."

"The puzzles are many and varied, and I confess the solving of a couple (including a testing music puzzle) escaped me. You can get clues by looking diligently about and by referring to the database. It may throw light where before there was just shadow. You should also use your translator. Chinese inscriptions are everywhere, and they can prod you in the right direction if you can discern the deeper meaning within many of them."

"Playing a game so totally Chinese was diverting in itself. It gave me 8 to 10 hours of reasonable puzzling. It might give a more insightful adventurer something more."

PC Gamer, November 1996

"Here's the story: You're an archaelogist excavating the tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi, the Chinese emperor responsible for unifying China, developing a set system of currency, and standardizing the Chinese writing system. For all his virtues, Qin had an intense fear of death, and constantly sought a potion of eternal life. Coincidentally enough, your expedition is funded by a high-up who shares Qin's fear and craves his own immortality. But before the expedition begins, you find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time, as an earthquake rips open the ground and sends you tumbling into Qin's tomb.

"In standard Myst style, your welcome mat is embroidered with a huge number of dip & twiddle puzzles that have little or no connection to the plot, but which you must solve in order to progress through the game. Qin involves navigating a static, rendered environment, picking things up, clicking on hot-spots, and sliding tiles around in order to open doors. There are a few interesting features thrown in, like the ability to examine and rotate objects, and a thoroughly researched online encyclopedia on the history of the Qin Dynasty. One handy addition to your scant arsenal is a data visor that translates on-screen Chinese characters into English, giving welcome clues to the more obscure puzzles."

Adventure Gamer by Ray Ivey, June 22, 1999

"Oops! I accidentally learned something! The mysteries in the game are driven by Chinese history, philosophy and folklore, and this content is presented with a great deal of finesse and intelligence. It was quite enjoyable to wind my way through the poetry, symbols, sayings and stories that filled this world."

"I would recommend Qin for its lovely, mysterious atmosphere, intriguing content, beautiful graphics and compelling (if easy) puzzles."
