Can You Succeed Where Montgomery
Failed?
By early September 1944, the Germans were in full retreat
with Wehrmacht units streaming back to the Fatherland in complete disarray.
However, German commanders were beginning to reorganize a defense line just as
the Allied advance stalled due to the lack of supplies. Montgomery argued that
a single attack should be on his line of advance through Holland and on to
Germany. His plan, code named "Market-Garden" called for an Allied Airborne
Army consisting of three Airborne Divisions to seize a series of five bridges
over a one hundred kilometer stretch through Holland.
Market-Garden '44 covers the epic airborne battle that
occurred in September 1944, when Montgomery gambled with 35,000 paratroppers in
a bid to cross the Rhine and bring an early end to the war against Germany.
Unfortunately, Arnhem was the resting spot of two battle weary SS Divisions,
and the ensuing combat was among the fiercest recorded during the war.
Features:
1
kilometer hexes, 2 hour turns, with a master map measuring approximately 120 by
40 kilometers. Over 880 units represent the German and Allied forces in this
classic airborne envelopment, mainly at battalion and company level.
Players control tank, reconnaissance,
artillery, infantry, parachute, glider, engineer, antitank, flak, rocket,
headquarters, and a wide variety of other specialized units.
35 historically based scenarios are
included, with several "what-if" scenarios. There are six campaign scenarios,
with alternative drop sites for the airborne troops and the possible inclusion
of the 52nd "Lowland" air transportable division.
Market-Garden '44 can be viewed and played
in either 2d or 3d mode. A new "quick play" feature allows the computer AI's
turn to resolve ten times the previous speed, allowing for much faster
play.
