Reviews:
ComputerLife, February 1997
"The twentieth century has seen everything from the
invention of the nuclear bomb to the brief reign of the hula hoop. DK
Multimedia's Chronicle of the 20th Century provides a comprehensive look at the
people and events that have shaped the past 97 years and lets you come up with
your own take on our times.
"Based on the best-selling book of the same name, the disc
provides more than 8,000 articles, 2,000 photos, and 100 videos in a frank,
newspaper-style interface. The information included on names, dates and places
is detailed enough to satisfy history buffs, but the disc's real strength lies
in the easy entry points it provides if you want to simply browse. My favorite
was the book of scandals, which shed light on hush-hush topics like the
romantic tale of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, and the murky depths of
Chappaquiddick.
"Also quick to draw me in were the This-Day-In-History
search function (which for October 28 unearthed such paradoxical headlines as
'Whales Escape Ice in Vast Rescue Effort' and 'Mussolini's Armies Invade
Europe') and the 130 biographies, from Muhammad Ali to Boris Yeltsin.
"With its innovative presentation, which juxtaposed 'Five
Burglars Found in Watergate Offices' and 'David Bowie Releases Ziggy Stardust'
on the same news screen, Chronicle of the 20th Century raised my awareness of
the wide and often ironic range of events that have shaped our times. For
anyone looking to take stock as we head toward the millennium, this disc is a
more than worthwhile buy."
