"A true out-of-body (or in-body) experience that's as educational as it is entertaining, The Learning Co.'s BodyWorks 6.0 is among the most comprehensive human anatomy programs available today. While other titles - most notably, A.D.A.M. The Inside Story - come close, BodyWorks' many illustrations, impressive 3-D models of human body parts and organs, and detailed explanations and videos give it a leg up on the competition.

"BodyWorks' 80 rotating 3-D models let you view body parts, entire systems, and individual organs from almost any angle. In addition, the program's slick zoom feature lets you move in for an even closer look by dragging a slider.

"As you view the models, BodyWorks identifies each section of the body part or organ whenever you rest the cursor on it. To find out more about an individual part, simply double-click on it, and the program displays related text and a more detailed picture if one is available. There's also plenty of hyperlinked text that lets you explore related topics by clicking on highlighted words or phrases, as well as audio pronunciations for 1,400 anatomic terms.

"BodyWorks also makes good use of video clips to explain anatomical systems. The program's narrated slide shows (called lessons) are less impressive, however, and cover many of the same topics as the videos.

"BodyWorks' interface resembles a Web page with frames. It's easy to get around by clicking on body parts, icons, or hyperlinked text, with additional navigation assistance provided by the useful home, forward, and back buttons. There's also a handy comprehensive index available if you get lost or veer too far off course, as well as a built-in link to the BodyWorks Web page, where you'll find up-to-date anatomy articles and a directory of related medical Web sites.
