Reviews:
The Adrenaline Vault by Bob
Mandel
"For a complex game, the basic story is remarkably
straightforward. You play the role of a new inexperienced god with potentially
great divine capacities, and you train a pet creature to aid you in spreading
your influence among villages dominated by rival deities. Specifically, you
attempt to get people to worship you as your means of extending your sphere of
influence and expanding your ability to perform miracles..."
"...To get your goals accomplished, you can scare the
villagers into submission by casting fireballs, lightning bolts, or massive
stones into their villages; or you can build trust by supplying the villagers
what they need and by saving them from peril. You and your creature may even
conduct opposite strategies successfully in this regard. The genius of the game
design is that, if undertaken carefully, both the positive carrot and the
negative stick can be fun and equally successful in achieving your goals. How
common is it in a game to be able to determine whether the entire mood is
upbeat or downbeat?"
"Black & White integrates in an innovative and effective
way several different styles of play, where what you do has direct and
multilevel effects on the environment around you. Truly addictive, it has found
a way to tug on our emotional heartstrings at the same time it appeals to our
cravings for power and control. Others have tried games dealing with heaven and
hell, good and evil, and light and darkness, but never with such success. It is
easily one of the most intricate computer releases ever devised. Parts are a
bit problematic, such as the combat, challenges, and village management, but
most of what you experience is endlessly fascinating. Every gamer should be
exposed to this release both to find out how truly imaginative digital
recreation can be and, indeed, to find out a lot about what our values really
are, as for most of us that is not at all a black-and-white question."
