Discovery Schools
"This option-packed sports simulation is exciting and fresh. Children
approximately ages 6-11 will enjoy learning the rules of hockey, choosing and
"managing" a hockey team, and practicing their game."
"A terrific bonus game of air hockey can be found in Practice Mode. This is
a great diversion, and the option of having multiple pucks roll onto the rink
is a fun variation on this popular game."
"There are fun extras that add to the entertainment value of the program.
Sunny Day adds her play-by-play commentary and Buddy Cheque offers color
commentary. At the end of a game, stars of the game are selected. The program
loosely follows NHL rules with age-appropriate modifications (such as the
choice of 3, 5, or 10 minute periods), ensuring that children learn some
official rules and have fun at the same time. At the end of one game, for
example, Buddy Cheque says, "Brought to you by 110 Percent Juicethe only
juice in the world that defies mathematics." The controls of Backyard Hockey
are a little trickier to understand than those of previous titles in the
series, but all things considered, this program is an excellent sports
simulation. The interface and graphics are noticeably improved."
