TITLE: Improved "Los Angles" Class Submarine COUNTRY: United States of America DESIGNATIONS: SSN (751-773) TYPE: Nuclear-propelled Attack Submarine PROGRAMME: With 62 boats commissioned over a twenty year period, the "Los Angeles" class SSNs are the definitive attack submarines. Having taken the Cold War to the gates of the Soviet SSBN bastions, and with the launch of 15 Tomahawks against Baghdad, the 688s are the yardstick against which all other submarines are measured. Initially commissioned in 1976, this multipurpose sub was primarily designed to eliminate hostile SSBNs before they could launch missiles against the USA. However, their roles have broadened to include, among other things, task force defense, seal team deployment, and cruise missile land attacks. Built to replace the "Sturgeon" class, the Los Angeles class has 12 vertical launch tubes capable of firing Tomahawk missiles and runs approximately five knots faster. The class became improved with the commissioning of the San Juan (SSN 751). The major enhancements include removing the sail-mounted hydroplanes, and replacing them with retractable bow planes to allow for surfacing through ice, as well as improved quieting and the ability to launch mines.
