1905 Edward Stratemeyer begins his publishing empire, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, where he hires ghostwriters to write children's series books.
1929 Stratemeyer conceives of a girls' version of the Hardy Boys - Nancy Drew. He asks Mildred Wirt, ghostwriter, to launch the series.
1930 The first Nancy Drews are published. Stratemeyer passes away, and his daughters take over the business.
1931 Two new characters are introduced: cousins Bess and George, who become Nancy's permanent sidekicks.
1932 Nancy Drew is the best-selling juvenile series in all of America. Nancy's boyfriend, Ned Nickerson, enters the scene.
1938 Warner Bros. Pictures releases the first of 4 movies based on the Nancy Drew series. Teen actress Bonita Granville plays Nancy.
1940 Nancy Drew makes her debut in foreign publishing. The "Froken Detektiv" series is published in Norway, and renames Nancy as "Kitty." Over the next several decades Nancy is published in 17 different countries, and 14 different languages.
1948 Mildred Wirt leaves the series. Other writers, both men and women, begin to work on new titles.
1949 Original artist Russel Tandy paints his last illustration for the Nancy Drew books. Other artists are hired, and Nancy's "look" becomes younger and less glamorous.
1957 The first Nancy Drew merchandising, a board game, is produced by Parker Brothers.
1959 The Nancy Drew books undergo a massive overhaul. They are revised and rewritten to be shorter, more fast-paced, with current cultural references.
1967 The prestigious Madame Alexander Doll Company releases a Nancy Drew doll. Today it is one of the most scarce and valuable Nancy Drew collectibles.
1977 The Nancy Drew Mysteries airs on TV, with actress Pamela Sue Martin playing Nancy.
1986 Simon & Schuster releases a spin-off series that departs from the original Nancy Drew. The Nancy Drew Files series, aimed at an older audience, revolutionizes Nancy's image.
1998 publishes Secrets Can Kill, the first ever Nancy Drew CD-ROM game.
1999 launches second Nancy Drew interactive mystery game, Stay Tuned for Danger.
